4th of July Party Planning
With one of my favorite holidays, Independence Day, upon us I thought it timely to share some of my favorite party ideas. These ideas make the day fun, laid-back, and memorable.
Now, I love to experiment with recipes and menus as much as the next girl but my opinion is that the July 4th meal should be easy and traditional. The easier the menu the more time the host or hostess has to enjoy the day. So I say fire up the grill and load it with burgers and hot dogs! If you want to get creative just offer more non-traditional toppings along with the ketchup and mustard. I find that avocados or spinach are wonderful on a burger. For the hot dogs, wrap a slice of bacon around it and top with shredded cheese. Just remember, you are FREE to make it your way!
Always on my July 4th menu is potato salad. I make it using my grandmother’s recipe and it is always a hit. Typically I offer baked beans and deviled eggs as well. And while it is still hot I will throw some ears of corn on the grill. For dessert I love to have something fruity, like my famous American Flag Cake. Sponge cake covered with whipped cream and fresh raspberries and blueberries is light and sweet. I also make cookies or cupcakes with a July 4th theme for the kids at the party.
While the food is always enjoyable my favorite thing to do is decorate! I have lots of red, white, and blue paper garland that I made for this year’s party. The star-shaped garland will adorn all the railing on the deck and patio areas and drape around the gazebo. The buffet table and dining tables will be covered in red and blue striped tablecloths that scream 4th of July! For the buffet table I have baskets with red, white and blue liners that are of varying sizes that will hold everything from the silverware to the hamburger buns. On the dining tables I will have votives in the colors of the day and centerpieces of clusters of handmade paper fans on bamboo skewers in small vases. These fans also serve as favors for the guests.
The day’s agenda should also include some fun activities. A game of badminton is always a great way to spend the warm afternoon or early evening. If you have a pool, even better! A nice swim on the hot 4th is a perfect way to spend the day! I also enjoy playing a game of softball with friends and family. Don’t forget to plan some party games as well. The three-legged race and water balloon toss are old school and lots of fun for all ages.
With all of my planning all I will have to do is sit back and enjoy the party and prepare for the fireworks! I love planning a party that my guests will enjoy and remember. Hopefully this 4th of July will be a memorable one. So from my party to yours-have a fun and safe 4th of July!
